The Main Types of Online Casino Games

What you will find in the lobby of a UK-licensed online casino.

Slots

Reel-based games in a huge range of themes and formats, including Megaways and jackpot slots. Stakes are capped at £5 per spin (£2 for 18–24-year-olds).

Live casino

Real dealers stream blackjack, roulette, baccarat and game shows from studios. You place bets through the screen.

Table games

Computer-generated versions of blackjack, roulette, baccarat and poker-style games, each with published rules.

Bingo and Slingo

Some casinos also offer 75- and 90-ball bingo and Slingo, a mix of slots and bingo. Of the casinos we review, MrQ has bingo in its main lobby, while Unibet and Coral offer it as a separate product.

Game by Game

How Each Game Works

The basic mechanics of the games you will meet most often. Whatever you play, open the game's rules or information screen first: it shows the RTP, the stake range and exactly how bets are settled.

Slots

Each spin fills a grid with symbols, and you win when matching symbols line up along set paylines or, in 'ways' games, across neighbouring reels. In Megaways titles the number of symbols on each reel changes with every spin, so the number of ways to match changes too. Bonus rounds and multipliers add variety but are built into the same RTP. In Great Britain the stake is capped at £5 a spin (£2 if you are 18 to 24), and autoplay is not allowed.

Roulette

A ball settles in one numbered pocket of a spinning wheel. Bets on colours or odd and even win often but pay little; bets on a single number win rarely but pay more. The green zero is what gives the house its edge, and wheels with an extra double zero increase it, so check which version you are playing.

Blackjack

You play against the dealer's hand, trying to finish closer to 21 without going over. Tables differ in the number of decks, when the dealer must stand and how a blackjack is paid, and each of these rules shifts the house edge. The rules panel shows them. Careful play narrows the edge but never removes it.

Baccarat

You back the 'player' hand, the 'banker' hand or a tie, and the cards are then dealt by fixed rules with no further decisions from you. A commission is usually taken on winning banker bets. It is a quick game, which means stakes add up fast.

Live game shows

Presenter-led games streamed from a studio, usually built around a large wheel or board. They feel like television entertainment, but they work like any other casino game: outcomes are random and the house keeps a share over time.

Bingo and Slingo

In 90-ball bingo each ticket has three rows and prizes go to one line, two lines and a full house; 75-ball bingo uses a five-by-five card and set patterns. Numbers are drawn automatically online. Slingo puts a number grid under a single reel, and each spin reveals numbers to mark off.

What a Session Really Costs

RTP describes a game over millions of rounds. What shapes your own spending is simpler: the stake per round multiplied by the number of rounds you play. At £1 a spin, 200 spins mean £200 staked. On a game with a 96% RTP, the long-run expectation is that about £8 of that stays with the casino, but over a short session the actual result can swing a long way in either direction.

Speed matters as much as stake size. Slots and quick table games such as baccarat settle many rounds an hour, while live tables move more slowly. The same stake can therefore cost very different amounts per hour depending on the game.

Decide in advance how much you are prepared to spend on a session and treat it as the price of the entertainment. Reality checks, session reminders and deposit limits in your casino account keep that decision in front of you once play starts.

Playing Responsibly: What Good Looks Like

Games are designed so the casino keeps a share of stakes over time. These habits help keep play within your limits.

Good signs
  • ✓Game rules and RTP published in the game's information screen
  • ✓A clear display of your balance and stake
  • ✓Easy access to reality checks and session reminders
  • ✓Stake limits applied on online slots
  • ✓Games from established, licensed software studios
Habits to avoid
  • ✗Treating RTP as a prediction of what you will win
  • ✗Chasing losses or increasing stakes to 'win back' money
  • ✗Playing when tired, stressed or after drinking
  • ✗Playing without a budget or time limit
  • ✗Believing any strategy can beat the house edge
Guide

Understanding Casino Games

Three ideas that explain how casino games work.

Magnifying glass over playing cards and chips

Return to player (RTP)

RTP is the share of all stakes a game is designed to pay back over millions of plays — for example 96%. The remaining share is the house edge. In any single session your result can be very different, and most sessions end with a loss.

Random number generators

Slots and computer-generated table games use a random number generator (RNG) to decide every outcome. Previous results do not affect the next one, so there is no such thing as a slot that is "due" to pay.

Volatility

Volatility describes how results are spread. Low-volatility games tend to pay smaller amounts more often; high-volatility games pay less often but in larger amounts. Neither changes the house edge.

UK game design rules

UK-licensed online slots cannot offer autoplay, must not present a loss as a win, and are subject to minimum spin speeds and stake limits.
